Pokemon Go and the Christian Parent…

As a Christian parent the thing I want to do most is to lead my children in God’s direction.  I try and bring scripture into all things and relate whatever they are doing back to God in some form or fashion.  When Pokemon Go came out about a week ago I had NO IDEA what it was.  I am 41 years old so I did not play Pokemon when it came out.  However, the craze has gone wild and before I let my kids do something like this I like to check it out first.  I consulted an expert on the game…my 25 year old brother!  He explained to me how it worked and we were well on our way to catching Pokemon.

Since that day there have been numerous articles that have come out about the DANGERS of Pokemon.  I have read most of them with a discerning and open attitude and here is what I feel about how I as a Christian parent should approach the game.

Pokemon was originally created as anti-Christian… http://www.p4rgaming.com/pokemon-creator-admits-games-aimed-towards-satanists/

After reading this article I think there are a few things we can learn from this…Great opportunity to talk with your kids about evolution and our actual ultimate Creator!  Talk about how God created all things in nature. “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.” Colossians 1:16

Pokemon are actually demons… http://www.p4rgaming.com/pokemon-creator-admits-games-aimed-towards-satanists/

If this were to actually come up then what better way to talk with your kids about spiritual warfare.  “You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4   Have them look at the video Greater by Mercy Me…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9XFO1oSk68     However, I am not going to even bring up with my kids that I think they are hunting demons!

While I think both of the above points are not things that will make me tell my kids you can not participate in Pokemon, there is something that I can already tell is a problem.  Pokemon Go is surely the next IDOL for kids.  Just like Minecraft and any other fad.  For kids an idol is something that takes all of their time and is all they think and talk about.  This is when I actually think that the conversation with your child must be one to help them not make Pokemon Go their idol.  “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.
Exodus 20:4 NLT

When I was younger my idols were skateboarding, swatch watches, sports, and music.  They all contained elements that were not good and could possibly lead me down the wrong path but the main problem was simply that they took up all my time.

I am convinced that Pokemon Go is not going anywhere anytime soon so my goal is to have my kids not make it an idol and use it to bring people to God’s kingdom.  Every church I know of is a PokeStop or a PokeGym.  This means where will be all kinds of unchurched people on church campuses.  My prayer is that they will be engaged in conversations with Christians and start a relationship with God.  I do believe that he has used sick people, disciples, and can surely use Pokemon Go for His glory!
